Jeremy Goldstein and New York’s New LRIS Online Portal

Trying to find the right lawyer in a big city can be difficult. There are hundreds of lawyer advertising all over the city, and it’s not always clear what exactly they’re qualified to handle. Most big cities have some kind of free service where people can get help finding lawyers.

For New Yorkers, the Lawyer Referral and Information Service is that organization. The LRIS has been providing attorney referrals for decades. To further help individuals looking for a lawyer, the LRIS has just launched an online portal. This service will be available 24 hours a day, every day. If they choose, individuals may still use the old LRIS telephone service.

The online portal was designed to ease possible stress and frustration while trying to find a qualified lawyer. This new service also allows lawyers to reach more potential clients and offer a lower cost to consultations.

This new service is also simpler to use. The individual goes onto the LRIS website and fills out a confidential questionnaire. The questionnaire is then reviewed by a State Bar staff member before being matched with a local attorney(s). Referrals are free, but consultations start at $35. There’s no obligation for individuals to retain any attorney they’ve been matched with.
